Herbs for Digestion

Herbs for Digestion

body-1621161

Most herbalists depend heavily on herbal teas and tinctures that support the gut and promote a healthy digestive system. The gut can even be likened to a second brain. When you are upset or stressed your gut knows it. You get that sensation in the gut and emotions and thoughts move into action.
Cutting-edge research is currently investigating how the second brain mediates the body’s immune response; after all, at least 70 percent of our immune system is aimed at the gut to expel and kill foreign invaders. (1)
In his article, The Fallible Mind -Emotion, perception, and other tricks of the brain January 17, 2017  published in Psychology Today, Richard E. Sytowic MD, MFA, professor of neurology at George Washington University writes “As researchers turn their microscopes to these hidden environments, they have discovered something remarkable: There’s an entire ecosystem of bacteria and a vast neural network operating in our guts. This ecosystem is our second brain, and comprises some 100 million neurons, more than the spinal cord. This is not a thinking brain—it does not reason, write poetry, or solve multi-linear regressions—but mounting evidence suggests that your gut’s health strongly influences your mood. It’s not just that a stomachache can sour your day. It’s more than that. The enteric nervous system is a mesh-like network of neurons that lines the entire digestive tract. It causes the sensation of nervous butterflies or a pit in your stomach that are innate parts of our psychological stress responses. Up to 90 percent of the cells involved in these responses carry information to the brain rather than receiving messages from it, making your gut as influential to your mood as your head is. Maybe even more.” You can read and discover more here (2).
