Black cohosh root, or cimicifuga racemosa, is a perennial growing above the ground, the stem of which does not become woody. However, it is not the upper herbaceous part of the plant that is used, but rather the dried black cohosh root.
Research shows that Native Americans began using Black Cohosh centuries ago to help ease childbirth, menstrual irregularities, and menopausal symptoms (1)
As with any herb, always consult with your doctor prior to use. Black cohosh is not recommended for use during pregnancy.
